Principal Functional Safety Expert

The Energy Industries Division has an industry leading position and focus on standardizing safety related solutions, processes and tools to secure global consistency, be competitive and drive continuous improvement. As part of this mandate, the functional safety manager will lead a technical authority team of functional safety experts to deliver the aims and objectives of the Divisions’ functional safety policy and strategy. The functional safety manager is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining a Divisional standard for Functional Safety Management processes associated with the tendering and delivery of safety related projects and services from a globally located network of project and service safety execution teams. This position is graded as ‘global functional safety technical authority manager’ and you will be reporting to the ‘global automation engineering manager’.

Your responsibilities
- Manage the ABB functional safety management program, policy, competency assurance and third-party accredited certification requirements, including the line management and development of a dedicated team of ABB functional safety experts
- Work closely with supporting the technical functional safety related activities of the ABB Third Party Accredited Projects and Service Safety Execution Centers on a global basis
- Undertake a range of functional safety related support services including to:
- Set, devise, govern and continuously improve the management system i.e. procedures, forms and templates to demonstrate compliance to the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) safety related standards
- Ensure the quality and functional safety management systems are in alignment and kept relevant with regards to changes in safety standards and associated industry guidance on the ABB information management system portal
- Deliver functional safety-based training courses, write technical papers and deliver specialist technical presentations to support ABB safety project execution and service healthcare contracts and work wining strategies
- Provide specialist expert level technical support to ABB safety system delivery teams on a range of technical queries in safety related project execution delivery and operations service across the entire safety lifecycle phases
- Work with the strategic safety product development team to provide support from the end-user’s perspective for next generation updates and current technology evolution strategies for ABBs range of safety related products and services
- Liaise with the external third-party certification body to ensure the global ABB functional safety management certificate remains valid.
Your background
- A recognized industry leader in functional safety management with a minimum of 15 years’ experience in the key issues relating to the professional application of functional safety management for the specification, design, engineering, operations and maintenance of safety related systems within an operational engineering environment
- Relevant technical engineering degree with chartered status or equivalent qualified principal engineer
- Certificated as a minimum to TUV Rheinland Functional Safety Engineer or Exida CFSE status by examination
- Demonstratable experience of engaging in a comprehensive range of detailed technical safety related matters on a global basis, and with successfully managing differing country cultures, competencies, strategies and safety related objectives
- Significant knowledge and application of safety related market experience to be able to demonstrate an authoritative understanding of the IEC 61511 compliant relationships between end users, EPC’s (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) and systems integrators
- Significant and demonstrable experience of planning, leading and carrying out functional safety audits and functional safety assessments
- Significant and demonstrable credible experience of presenting functional safety related technical updates / technical solutions and engagement directly both internally to ABB and externally with Clients, Stakeholders, Regulatory Bodies, Industry Groups and Academia
